Gelitin/Gelatin's Anarchic Installation Invades Rome's FOROF
The Austrian collective Gelitin/Gelatin, known for irreverent, participatory art since 1993, opens 'Nimbus Limbus Omnibus' at FOROF in Rome on October 2, 2024. Curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, the monumental installation responds to the underground archaeological site of the Basilica Ulpia, where slaves were freed in the 2nd century AD. The title references the Latin manumission formula, symbolizing liberation from conventions. The work is split into two nuclei: one fills the hypogeum with 25 years of the collective's relics, evoking catacombs and rites of passage; the other features 2019 busts with mirrored napes instead of faces, critiquing communication and identity in a hyperconnected age. For the vernissage, the artists will prepare sweets with Rimessa Roscioli. A public program runs until June 30, 2025, and a monograph by Magonza accompanies the show. Gelitin/Gelatin (Wolfgang Gantner, Ali Janka, Florian Reither, Tobias Urban) have exhibited at MoMA PS1, Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, Palais de Tokyo, and represented Austria at the 2001 Venice Biennale.
