Geeta Kapur Discusses India's Curatorial Development and Institutional Challenges in 2011 Interview

opinion-review · 2026-04-20

In a 2011 conversation with curator Natasha Ginwala, Geeta Kapur, an Indian art critic, addressed the challenges faced by curatorial practices in India, pointing out the inadequacies of museum infrastructure and art history education. She referenced the limited branches of the National Gallery of Modern Art as a case in point. Kapur acknowledged the preparatory discussions occurring at Maharaja Sayajirao University and the School of Art and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Since the 1990s, there has been a rise in international engagement and private collections, such as the Jehangir Nicholson Collection and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. She urged a comparison with China's state-led initiatives and advocated for insights from Central and South America and West Asia. Kapur expressed her concern over the diminishing presence of serious art journals.
