Gea Casolaro's Mare Magnum Nostrum at Museo Nazionale di Ravenna

Gea Casolaro's installation 'Mare Magnum Nostrum' at the Museo Nazionale di Ravenna is a participatory photographic archive exploring Mediterranean migration, identity, and environmental issues. The project, supported by Italian Council (2020), collects images uploaded by the public via a dedicated website and social media, forming a collective mosaic of stories from the early 1900s to today. Casolaro conceived the work in 2013 after the October 3 shipwreck off Lampedusa. The installation dialogues with the museum's ancient mosaics, creating a contemporary reinterpretation of cultural exchange. Director Emanuela Fiori notes that Casolaro's conceptual mosaic mirrors traditional mosaic techniques using varied materials. The project includes contributions from the COMMON project (coordinated by Legambiente) on marine litter. Casolaro emphasizes the need for mutual recognition across the Mediterranean, stating 'We are all on the same water.' The installation remains open to ongoing contributions, allowing visitors to rearrange photos on-site.
