Gea Casolaro Examines the Gaze at MACRO Rome

Gea Casolaro (Rome, 1965) explores the role of the other's gaze in constructing her work, a central theme in contemporary art criticism and research. Using photography and video, she presents a collective, multifaceted vision of reality. The exhibition includes the work 'A cosa starà pensando la persona accanto a te?' (2008), which served as a conceptual manifesto displayed on Bologna's streets to reflect on subjective viewpoints. The series 'South' challenges viewers to reconsider landscape perception and cultural limits. 'Sharing Gazes', created with students from the School of Fine Arts in Addis Ababa, seeks visual sharing and balance between different perspectives. The project 'Doppio sguardo' (2003) investigates society's gaze through an installation of photographs and a video shot along Calle Florida in Buenos Aires during the post-economic crisis period. The video offers an overview while photos reveal crucial details in the study of truth. Casolaro's art poses critical questions about cultural perception of images, presenting anthropological rather than purely artistic images, where the human gaze is considered the natural locus of images. The artist positions humans not as omnipotent subjects observing inert objects, but within a system where every element acts upon another.
