Gdynia's Modernist City Center Earns UNESCO World Heritage Inscription
In July 2026, Gdynia's modernist district was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, a recognition that came after two decades of advocacy and coincided with the city’s 100th anniversary of its charter. Initially referred to as 'Gdinam' in 1253, Gdynia transitioned from a fishing village to a significant port following Poland's independence after World War I. The freighter Kentucky made history as the first large ship to dock there on 13 August 1923. By 1939, Gdynia boasted 140 structures along Świętojańska Street and housed 122,000 residents. Although the Nazi invasion in September 1939 stunted its growth, the population grew to 250,000 by 1988. The UNESCO site encompasses 88 hectares, featuring modernist villas and the Centre of Modernism. Poland now has 18 UNESCO sites.
