GBPA Architects to Restore Milan's Historic 'Palazzo di Fuoco' with LED Lighting

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

GBPA Architects, founded by Antonio Gioli and Federica De Leva, won the competition to renovate the historic 'Palazzo di Fuoco' in Milan, owned by the All Star Real Estate Fund managed by Kryalos SGR. The project aims to preserve the original vision of architect Giulio Minoletti, who designed the building in 1958 with illuminated glass surfaces. At night, the building once displayed a rainbow of colored lights, topped with installations including a weather station, a news ticker, and a nine-meter clock—then the largest in Italy—now removed. GBPA's design retains the original facade's grid and glass modules while replacing windows with more efficient ones. A new internal piazza with a glass roof brings the city into the building. The key innovation is the use of LED technology to recreate the original nighttime illumination, making the building a landmark for Milan again.
