Gaza Biennale's Brooklyn Exhibition Showcases Resilience Through Print Replicas and Installation
In spring 2024, the Forbidden Museum of Jabal Al Risan initiated the Gaza Biennale, highlighting artists from Gaza who are experiencing displacement. The event employs a phoenix as a symbol to illustrate how these creators flourish despite destruction. After being showcased in Istanbul, Dublin, and Valencia, the exhibition will be held at Recess in Brooklyn until 20 December. A four-day showcase in mid-September featured 28 artists, with changing displays in the front gallery. Print replicas of works that couldn't be transported are included. Key highlights are Alaá Alshawa's watercolour portraits, Murad Al-Assar's poignant paintings, and Ghanem Alden's installation addressing systemic starvation. The organizers focus on a collaborative curation approach, emphasizing resilience to attract global interest in Gaza's artistic community.
