Gavin Jantjes Retrospective Opens in Sharjah
Sharjah Art Foundation and The Africa Institute present the first retrospective of South African artist and activist Gavin Jantjes, featuring over 100 works from 1970 to the present. The exhibition, titled 'Gavin Jantjes: To Be Free! A Retrospective 1970–2023,' traces his career from early printmaking and anti-apartheid activism to his recent non-figurative paintings. It includes a new series of large-scale works created during his 2022 residency at Sharjah Art Foundation. Jantjes, exiled from Cape Town at age 22, is recognized internationally for his human rights activism. The exhibition is organized in chapters marking key life moments and includes prints, drawings, paintings, film works, and archival materials. Curated by Salah M. Hassan, it runs from 18 November 2023 to 10 March 2024 at Al Mureijah Art Spaces.
