Gauguin Portraits Exhibition Travels from Ottawa to London
The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Gauguin Portraits, the first-ever show dedicated to Paul Gauguin's portraiture, will open at the National Gallery in London on October 7, 2019, running until January 26, 2020. Previously on view at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa until September 8, 2019, the exhibition was organized in collaboration between the two institutions. It features over fifty works including paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings, many rarely seen together. Loans come from the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. The show explores how Gauguin, known for his Polynesian paintings, revolutionized portraiture by breaking Western conventions focused on social status and family history, instead imbuing the genre with new meanings and forms.
