Gaudí's Last Original Residence at Casa Batlló Opens After Restoration

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-13

Casa Batlló in Barcelona has opened the restored Third Floor, the final original residence from Antoni Gaudí's renovation between 1904 and 1906. This area has been made accessible to the public for the first time following a three-year restoration project directed by architect Xavier Villanueva. The conservation approach, reminiscent of archaeological methods, has preserved a largely unaltered living space that was home to Batlló family descendants for over a century. The revamped apartment merges heritage conservation with modern design elements by Paola Navone – OTTO Studio, featuring furniture and textiles that stand out against the original architecture. Since 2005, Casa Batlló has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The restoration uncovered original 1906 features, such as floral stuccoes and undulating ceilings, while maintaining the space's residential essence for cultural gatherings.
