Gaten Matarazzo to star in Rent revival at London's Duke of York Theatre

other · 2026-05-19

Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo, 23, will make his West End debut in a modern revival of the rock musical Rent, opening at London's Duke of York Theatre on 26 September 2026. The production celebrates 30 years since the show's Broadway premiere. Matarazzo, who gained global fame as Dustin Henderson in Netflix's Stranger Things, will play Mark, the narrator and a documentary filmmaker. The revival is directed by Luke Sheppard, who recently won an Olivier Award for Paddington: The Musical and previously directed Rent. Producers Chris Harper and Sonia Friedman state the adaptation remains loyal to Jonathan Larson's original music. Rent, written and composed by Jonathan Larson, premiered in 1996 and was groundbreaking for centering LGBTQ+ stories during the HIV/AIDS crisis. Matarazzo has extensive stage experience, including Broadway productions of Dear Evan Hansen and Sweeney Todd, and earlier roles in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Les Misérables.
