A study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM) commissioned by the Umweltinstitut München warns that gas heating systems could become extremely expensive for tenants. The study projects a tenfold increase in gas network fees by the 2040s for those still using fossil gas. It states that operating gas heating and gas networks will involve significant economic risks by 2045 at the latest. The new Heizungsgesetz by Federal Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) had suggested that installing a new gas heating system was beneficial, but the study contradicts this. Tenants are particularly affected as they often have no say in the choice of heating system.
