Gary Indiana, Cultural Critic and Novelist, Dies at 74

Gary Indiana passed away on September 23, 2024, at the age of seventy-four. Known as a cultural critic, playwright, artist, and novelist, he gained recognition during the AIDS crisis within New York's downtown art community. From 1985 to 1988, he served as the art critic for the Village Voice, where he explored the relationship between art and corporate influence. Originally named Gary Hoisington and hailing from Derry, New Hampshire, he left home at sixteen to attend the University of California, Berkeley, but did not complete his studies. Relocating to New York in 1978, he became known for his sharp critiques. His collected works were published in the 2018 book 'Vile Days'. Indiana also authored fiction, including the 1989 novel 'Horse Crazy', a memoir in 2015, and his last essays in 'Fire Season' (2022).
