Gareth Nyandoro receives FT/Oppenheimerfunds Emerging Voices 2016 Art Award for Harare-inspired works
Gareth Nyandoro was honored with the FT/Oppenheimerfunds Emerging Voices 2016 Art Award for his abstract representations of commercial life in Harare, Zimbabwe. The selection committee, which includes artists, curators, directors, and scholars, chooses recipients whose artwork showcases remarkable skill and deepens regional appreciation. In 2015, Nyandoro completed a residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and launched his inaugural solo exhibition in the UK at Tiwani Contemporary in London in February 2016. Notable runners-up were Palestinian artist Noor Abuarafeh and Kenyan-German multimedia creator Syowia Kyambi. The Emerging Voices awards cover three categories: art for Africa and the Middle East, film for Latin America and the Caribbean, and literary fiction for the Asia-Pacific region, with each 2016 winner receiving around £32,000, or $40,000.
