Gardar Eide Einarsson's 'Music Playing Over Speech' at Maureen Paley

exhibition · 2026-04-17

Gardar Eide Einarsson is showcasing his exhibition 'Music Playing Over Speech' at Maureen Paley's gallery in London from January 17 to March 21. The Norwegian artist, who is based in Tokyo, presents two series that explore hidden meanings. The first, 'Closed Caption' (2024–25), features ten black gouache pieces with white text snippets like '[music playing over speech]' and '[footsteps departing]', creating powerful non-images. The second series, 'Incendiary Test Area' (2024–25), includes three woodblock prints created with Shoichi Kitamura, depicting haunting interiors of model homes built by the US Army during World War II in Utah. Einarsson's work reflects on themes of preservation and destruction, immersing viewers in a sense of disconnection and darkness.
