Garbatella 20/20: Roman Quarter's Centenary Exhibition
To mark its first centenary, the Garbatella district in Rome is the subject of a participatory exhibition reconstructing its urban and architectural history. The project, Garbatella 20/20, was developed by over 100 students, doctoral candidates, and researchers from Roma Tre University's Department of Architecture, coordinated by professors Francesca Romana Stabile, Elisabetta Pallottino, and Paola Porretta, together with artist Pietro Ruffo. The exhibition is hosted at the MIBAC hub Moby Dick, where Ruffo's work 'La nuova gioventù' is also displayed. The neighborhood was originally built in the 1920s by the Istituto per le Case Popolari di Roma to address housing demand, designed by a group of young architects including Innocenzo Sabbatini, Plinio Marconi, Giovan Battista Trotta, and Giuseppe Nicolosi under Innocenzo Costantini. Their eclectic style, blending medieval, modernist, rural, classicist, and baroque references, later became known as 'barocchetto'. The project included a laboratory held from March to September 2019, documented in a video by Emiliano Martina and published in the 'Quaderni Garbatella 20/20'. It features interviews with residents, maps of the 44 historical lots, and a curated path highlighting key sites. Roma Tre rector Luca Pietromarchi stated that Garbatella serves as an architectural, urban, and social laboratory for hundreds of students.
