Garage Museum's 2010 Performance Art Survey
In 2010, Klaus Biesenbach, curator at MoMA and PS1, and RoseLee Goldberg, director of Performa, organized a historical exhibition at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow. The show traced the entire history of performance art from Futurism to the present, featuring seminal works such as Yayoi Kusama's early actions, Yoko Ono's Cut Piece (1965), Francis Alÿs's When Faith Moves Mountains (2002), and Matthew Barney's Drawing Restraint (2005). The project was notable for its open, participatory nature: all visitors, along with local artists and curators, were invited to contribute ideas and works to this "living exhibition," which concluded on September 26, 2010, with a large performance festival. The exhibition also traveled to New York, Boston, and Düsseldorf between 2009 and 2010.
