Garage Fontana: New Contemporary Art Space Opens in Modica

Garage Fontana, a new contemporary art space, opened in December 2024 in a former garage at Via Fontana 199 in Modica, Sicily. Founded by the Associazione In Contemporanea and directed by Margherita Ratti, the space focuses on young talents through collective and solo exhibitions. Ratti, who holds a degree in architecture from Politecnico di Milano and a master's in contemporary art from Sorbonne University in Paris, adopts a multidisciplinary curatorial approach combining art, design, and architecture. The inaugural exhibition, 'In campo,' opened on December 14, 2024, recreating a natural habitat of the Iblei Mountains plateau with works produced and collected by Ratti. Subsequent exhibitions include Michelangelo Menu's 'My Artist's Strip' (December 30, 2024 – February 28, 2025), 'Hammons Hotel' (March 15 – April 20, 2025), and Romaric Tisserand's 'Every Country is a Fiction,' on view until July 6, 2025. The space also hosts cyclical events such as readings and musical selections led by local figures. Future plans include a collective exhibition in September 2025 featuring a scenography by architect-artist duo Agathe Labaye & Florian Sumi, originally for the Frac Île-de-France in Paris, and a solo exhibition in December 2025 by American artist Zoe Meyer, curated by Théo-Mario Coppola. Ratti aims to create a network with other cultural realities in the area, integrating art, architecture, design, and publishing.
