GAMeC's 'A Practice of Freedom' Film Program Screens 'Paris is Burning'

GAMeC, in collaboration with Lab 80 film and the University of Bergamo's Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures, presents 'A Practice of Freedom', a film program tied to the 'Pedagogy of Hope' interdisciplinary initiative. Throughout 2026, monthly screenings will blend classics, auteur films, and artist videos. The program is inspired by Paulo Freire and bell hooks, exploring marginalization, pedagogical experimentation, and technology ethics. On May 27 at 9 PM, at Sala dell'Orologio in Palazzo della Libertà, Bergamo, Jennie Livingston's 1990 documentary 'Paris is Burning' will screen. The film, shot over six years, captures the African American and Latinx drag ball scene in early-1980s Harlem, featuring legends like Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, and Venus Xtravaganza. It examines 'houses' as chosen families and the balls as creative political resistance against racism, poverty, homophobia, and the AIDS crisis. The screening is in original language with Italian subtitles.
