GAM Milano reopens eight renovated halls with new lighting and color scheme

institutional · 2026-05-05

The Galleria d'Arte Moderna (GAM) in Milan has completed a significant renovation of eight halls on its first floor, covering approximately 250 square meters. The work, which lasted about a month from mid-November to December 22, 2017, included repainting walls in two Farrow & Ball shades—Pigeon grey and Dead Salmon amber pink—and replacing heterogeneous marble bases with warm grey painted wooden plinths for sculptures. The lighting was upgraded with 150 LED spots by Erco, and shutters were closed to enhance the viewing experience. The reinstallation also involved 60 restored sculptures, part of the exhibition "100 anni. Scultura a Milano 1815-1915" (March 23 to December 3, 2017). The museum's permanent collection of over 4,000 works now displays 487 pieces, attracting 80,000 annual visitors (2017 data). The collection spans Neoclassicism (Appiani, Canova), Romanticism (Hayez, Faruffini, Mosè Bianchi, Induno, Piccio), Scapigliatura, Divisionism (Segantini, Grubicy, Longoni, Morbelli, Sottocornola, Nomellini), Symbolism (Previati, Segantini), and sculptures by Medardo Rosso and Martini. The museum plans to renovate the ticket office and bookshop in 2018. The café, managed by LùBar, remains a highlight.
