Gallery Sofie Van De Velde exhibition critiques media manipulation through seven artists' works

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From January 25 to March 18, 2018, Gallery Sofie Van De Velde in Antwerp hosted an exhibition featuring seven artists, co-curated by Max Pinckers and Joachim Naudts. The show, named after a poem by William Carlos Williams from 1955, delved into the influence of mainstream media on public perception. Among the featured works was Max Pinckers’ 2018 series, Margins of Excess, which highlighted Darius McCollum's challenge to his media depiction as an 'imposter.' Alfredo Jaar's piece, May 1, 2011, critiqued the portrayal of the Osama bin Laden raid, while Emmanuel Van der Auwera's VideoSculpture II (2015) deconstructed footage of Obama's inauguration. Other contributors included Boris Mikhailov, David Birkin, Matthias Bruggmann, and Johan Grimonprez, addressing issues of media skepticism in today's post-truth era, although some pieces received mixed reviews.
