Gallery Climate Coalition Launches Carbon Calculator for Art World

The Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC), a nonprofit organization founded by London-based gallerists including Thomas Dane (who recently opened a space in Naples), has launched a free online carbon calculator. The tool allows art sector operators to measure their CO2 emissions from travel, shipping, energy, and more—accounting for 90% of private gallery emissions. The GCC aims to reduce collective carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, in line with the Paris Agreement. Founding committee members include Kate Mac Garry, Greg Hilty and Juyoung Yoon of Lisson Gallery, Sadie Coles, Victoria Siddall and Matthew Slotover of Frieze, and Richard Scott of Scott & CO. The initiative also features an associate team, advisory committee, contributor network, and partner organizations. The website includes video testimonies to broaden debate on the socio-economic impacts of the climate crisis. The GCC emerged from discussions in spring 2020 during the pandemic, with the website and calculator going live in early 2021. The organization is recruiting galleries, professionals, and artists to join and promote waste reduction and carbon neutrality.
