Galleries Seek Concessions at Art Basel Hong Kong Amid Protests, Venice Biennale Announces National Selections

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

On January 16, 24 galleries, such as Paula Cooper and Matthew Marks, raised issues with Art Basel Hong Kong's directors, Marc Spiegler and Adeline Ooi, regarding a decline in collector attendance and limitations on free expression linked to pro-democracy protests. They sought extensions on payment deadlines, insurance, waived late fees, and a 50% reduction in booth fees. In their response on January 18, Spiegler and Ooi proposed reduced booth fees and longer payment plans but rejected the 50% discount as 'financially untenable.' Five galleries, including Luxembourg & Dayan, have opted out. Additionally, Zineb Sedira will represent France at the 2021 Venice Biennale, while Switzerland has chosen Latifa Echakhch. The Asia Society Triennial will launch on June 5, 2020, showcasing over 40 artists. Tate Britain has faced backlash over a £39,500 Head of Coffee position.
