Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice fully reopens after two-year restoration

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice has fully reopened after a two-year restoration, with the Palladian corridor now accessible for the first time in years. The corridor, designed by Andrea Palladio in the 16th century for the facade of the Convento della Carità, is located on the first floor and has been restored as part of the second lot of the 'Grandi Gallerie' project (rooms XII-XVII). The restoration improves visitor flow, aiding anti-Covid measures and accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The corridor will eventually house works by Bonifacio Veronese and Venetian portraiture from the late 16th century, including pieces by Jacopo Tintoretto. A highlight is the reconstructed ceiling painted by Giorgio Vasari for Ca' Corner Spinelli, reassembled after a process that began in 1987 with support from the state and private donors. Upcoming sections include a room dedicated to Jacopo Bassano and his sons, a space for 16th-century painters from Bergamo and Brescia (featuring Lorenzo Lotto's 'Ritratto di gentiluomo', Moretto, Romanino, and Savoldo), and a new room for masterpieces from the Gabinetto dei Disegni, which includes 20 drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. The museum is open Monday 8:15-14:00, Tuesday-Sunday 8:15-19:15, with weekend access by reservation only.
