Galleria Nazionale Roma Reboots with Time Is Out of Joint

The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, rebranded simply as Galleria Nazionale, has launched a new curatorial direction under director Cristiana Collu. The inaugural exhibition, Time Is Out of Joint, curated with Saretto Cincinelli, abolishes distinctions between modern and contemporary art. The show features 500 works by 170 artists arranged not chronologically or thematically but by visual and conceptual affinities, creating unexpected relationships. The museum's interior has been stripped of previous decorative elements, returning to a white-cube aesthetic. A recurring motif places neoclassical sculptures facing wall works, echoing Pistoletto's Venus of the Rags. The exhibition includes pieces by Umberto Boccioni, Auguste Rodin, Alberto Burri, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Ana Mendieta, Jeff Wall, and emerging artists like Luca Rento and Alessandro Piangiamore. Collu describes the show as a cinematic time, a flow of memory anticipating the future. The permanent collection is treated as a temporary exhibition, questioning the concept of permanence. The exhibition runs until April 15, 2018.
