Galleria Nazionale celebrates Vanni Scheiwiller's editorial legacy with exhibition
The Galleria Nazionale in Rome is hosting 'Vanni Scheiwiller e l’arte da Wildt a Melotti', curated by Peppino Appella and Laura Novati, twenty years after the publisher's death. Scheiwiller (1934-1999) took over Edizioni All’Insegna del Pesce d’Oro from his father Giovanni in 1951. The exhibition traces his editorial journey through artworks and publications, featuring pieces by Picasso, Modigliani, de Chirico, Savinio, and Futurists like Arnaldo Ginna and Ivo Pannaggi. A room is dedicated to Adolfo Wildt, Scheiwiller's grandfather and mentor to Fausto Melotti, showing works like 'L’anima e la sua veste' (1916) and 'Luce' (1920). Another room focuses on Melotti, including 'Teatrino per Scheiwiller' (1962). The final space presents works by Fontana, Burri, Consagra, Castellani, Emilio Vedova, and Kengiro Azuma, reflecting 1960s-70s Italian art. Scheiwiller married Alina Kalczyńska in 1980, bringing Polish Nobel laureates Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska to Italian readers. The exhibition includes documents, letters, and rare editions, highlighting his role as a 'modest but passionate reader' and 'unbridled bibliophile'.
