Galleria Il Gabbiano's 50-Year History Exhibited at CAMeC La Spezia

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The exhibition 'Attraverso l’arte. La galleria Il Gabbiano 1968-2018' at CAMeC in La Spezia celebrates five decades of the artist-run space with over 200 works across four rooms and a corridor, plus 50 paper posters as a site-specific installation in the Project Room. Curated by Mario Commone, the show chronologically divides works by decade, with the final room covering twenty years. Il Gabbiano, founded in 1968 by a dozen artists, organized over 530 exhibitions, bringing many outside artists to Liguria every two weeks. The display highlights Italian and international contemporary art movements including Visual Poetry, Fluxus, Conceptual Art, Body Art, and sound art. Featured artists include Lamberto Pignotti (collage, 1964), Edo Murti (exploded lithographs from Zagreb), Alighiero Boetti, Mimmo Rotella, poet Mirella Bentivoglio, and Urs Lüthi (nine photographs). A puzzle of invitation postcards recalls past openings. Explanatory panels narrate the gallery's history, which filled the void left after the 1965 Premio del Golfo. Collaborator Mara Borzone, involved since 1986, described the gallery as a 'wonderful adventure' that changed her worldview through discussion and multidisciplinary participation.
