Galleria Gracis in Milan Celebrates Antoni Tàpies Centenary with Solo Show

Galleria Gracis in Milan is hosting 'Segno | Memoria | Materia,' a solo exhibition curated by Luca Massimo Barbero honoring Catalan master Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923–2012) on his centenary. Running until March 31, 2023, at the Piazza Castello venue, the show features 23 works from 1959 to 2006, tracing Tàpies' exploration of sign, memory, and matter. Supported by Fondazione Hillary Recordati Merkus and BEL Real Estate Group, the exhibition positions Tàpies as a key figure of post-war Spanish art, whose practice resisted easy resolution. A catalogue published by Marsilio Arte will be presented on March 21, 2023, including texts by Barbero, writings from Tàpies' 1985 Milan retrospective, and unpublished critical testimonies. The presentation will feature a conversation between Barbero, critic Alberto Fiz, and Nuria Homs Serradella of Fundació Tàpies. Tàpies, awarded the Golden Lion for painting at the 1993 Venice Biennale, maintained an independent expressive freedom against the backdrop of Franco's regime. His return to Milan recalls the 1985 anthology at Palazzo Reale's Sala delle Cariatidi, curated by Guido Ballo, with parallel shows at Galleria Bergamini, Galleria del Naviglio, Studio Marconi, and Galleria Seno.
