Galleria Continua Opens Le Moulin in Paris Suburb

Galleria Continua inaugurated Le Moulin, a new 10,000 m² contemporary art space in Boissy-le-Châtel, a Paris suburb, on October 21, 2007. The exhibition runs until December 23, 2007. Following its strategy of establishing galleries outside city centers—first in San Gimignano, Italy, in the early 1990s, then in Beijing in 2004—the gallery now opens a private art center in a former industrial wasteland. The space features large-scale works by artists including Kendell Geers, Anish Kapoor, Chen Zhen, Lucy + Jorge Orta, Daniel Buren, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Bruno Peinado, Subodh Gupta, Hans Op de Beeck, and Luca Pancrazzi. The inaugural exhibition explores themes of repetition, scale, and monumentality. The second, more raw building retains traces of its industrial past, such as a CGT poster, and houses works that create correspondences around repetition. The exhibition questions the trend toward monumental art, referencing the rise of biennials, art fairs, and the 'Art Unlimited' section at Art Basel, as well as changes in art production modes. Le Moulin is described as a 'private art center,' a term borrowed from Emmanuelle Lequeux's article in Le Monde (October 20, 2007), comparable to Xippas gallery's La Réserve in Pacy-sur-Eure.
