Galleria Continua Opens 2019 Season with Four Solo Shows in San Gimignano

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Galleria Continua in San Gimignano launches its 2019 exhibition season on January 26 with solo shows by Giovanni Ozzola, Nikhil Chopra, Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, and Nari Ward. The four artists, ranging from mid-career to historically established, will present works across the gallery's original venue. Ozzola's project 'Octopus' draws on a Northwestern University discovery that half the human body originates from cosmic star collisions, exploring themes of existence through photographs, painted wall fragments, and philosophical inquiry. Ilya & Emilia Kabakov's installation 'The Eminent Direction of Thoughts' features a dark room with a chair, colored strings, and a bare bulb, reflecting their decades-long practice of using everyday objects to critique political shifts from the Soviet era to post-Stalinist Russia. Nari Ward's 'Down Doors' series presents doors as transitional portals addressing racism, migration, and national identity, using consumer goods to comment on economic life. Nikhil Chopra presents 'Drawing a Line through Landscape,' a performance, installation, and video piece originally created for documenta 14 in 2017, blending drawing, photography, sculpture, and performance to explore identity and autobiography. The exhibitions run until April 7, 2019.
