Galleria Canesso Opens New Milan Location with Antonio Campi Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Galleria Canesso, a leading international gallery specializing in Old Master paintings, opens a new branch in Milan at Via Borgonuovo 24 starting September 29, 2021. Founded in Paris in 1994 by Maurizio Canesso, the gallery expanded to Lugano in 2012 and now returns to Italy, betting on Milan's cultural resurgence. The inaugural exhibition, running from October 1 to November 20, 2021, features two nocturnal scenes by Antonio Campi (Cremona, 1522–1587) depicting Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and Christ before Caiaphas, never before shown publicly. These works exemplify the Lombard Mannerist experimentation with light that made Campi a favorite of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo and a precursor to Caravaggio. The exhibition also includes other 16th-century Cremonese paintings. The gallery is housed in the former greenhouse of Casa Valerio's garden, a historic Milanese palace behind the Pinacoteca di Brera. Canesso stated the decision to open during the spring 2020 lockdown was a deliberate response to uncertainty, with Ginevra Agliardi as director of the Milan location. The gallery has sold works to major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris and Abu Dhabi, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and participates in fairs such as TEFAF Maastricht, TEFAF New York, and Fine Arts Paris.
