Galleria Borghese to Open Piranesi-Inspired Restaurant

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

In Rome, the Galleria Borghese is undergoing renovations on its basement level, which encompasses visitor amenities such as ticketing and a cafeteria. These phased renovations commenced in July 2019, with the museum remaining open throughout. The initial phase focuses on expanding the cafeteria, while the subsequent phase will reach outdoor spaces that overlook the Secret Gardens. A new dining establishment will recreate the Caffè degli Inglesi, originally designed by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and will offer evening meals after regular hours. Architect Elisabetta Fabbri leads the project, which draws inspiration from Piranesi's 18th-century engravings, incorporating prints, bas-reliefs, and decor reflective of his work from 1767 to 1769. The project is anticipated to be finished by the year's end.
