Galleria Borghese 2022: Guido Reni, Tiziano, and Painting on Stone
The Galleria Borghese in Rome has announced its 2022 exhibition program, centered on the relationship between art and landscape. Director Francesca Cappelletti stated that the program explores the cultural nature of landscape and how the environment and natural materials have inspired artists. The exhibitions include 'Guido Reni a Roma. Il Sacro e la Natura' (9 Feb–22 May 2022), focusing on Reni's early Roman years and his interest in landscape painting, featuring the recently reacquired 'Danza campestre'. 'Tiziano. Dialoghi di Natura e di Amore' (15 Jun–18 Sep 2022) examines themes of nature and love in Titian's work, with a loan from the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna of 'Ninfa con pastore'. 'Meraviglia senza tempo. Pittura su pietra a Roma nel Seicento' (25 Oct 2022–29 Jan 2023) continues research on painting on stone, highlighting Sebastiano del Piombo's use of durable supports after the Sack of Rome. The museum also launches 'I quadri scendono le scale' (from 4 Jan 2022), rotating 15 works from storage into the permanent collection. Collaborations include the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and the Museo Egizio di Torino, which will lend a stele on 21 Sep 2022 for the bicentennial of the decipherment of hieroglyphs by Champollion and Young.
