Galileo Emendabili's 120th Birthday and São Paulo's Monumental Legacy

Galileo Emendabili, the Italian-born sculptor responsible for São Paulo's iconic Obelisco Mausoléu aos Soldados Constitucionalistas de 1932, would have turned 120 years old. His monumental 72-meter-high obelisk in Parque Ibirapuera, inaugurated on June 9, 1955, stands as the city's tallest structure. Emendabili fled Mussolini's Italy in 1923, disembarking in Santos on July 3 before settling in São Paulo's Italian community. Trained at the Real Academia de Belas Artes, he graduated in 1919 and created works like "Libertà" in 1921, honoring a youth killed by royal guards. In Brazil, he sculpted mausoleums for prominent families like the Bertoluccis and contributed the Alegoria da Pintura at the Ramos de Azevedo monument. The obelisk's construction spanned 43 years, conceived by Emendabili and engineered by Ulrich Edler, finally completed in 1970. It commemorates students and combatants killed during the 1932 attempt to overthrow Getúlio Vargas's provisional government, known variably as the "Revolta de 32" or "Revolução de 32." The monument features a central sculpture of a combatant with half-closed eyes, guarding the bullet-shaped structure. Emendabili's sculptures are scattered across high-traffic areas like Avenida Faria Lima, Parque Ibirapuera, and Cemitério da Consolação, daily encountered by thousands of paulistanos.
