Galerie Gisela Capitain Opens Temporary Space in Rome
Galerie Gisela Capitain, founded in 1986 in Cologne, is launching a temporary space in Rome called Zweigstelle Capitain (German for 'branch'). The space opens March 5, 2022, at Via dei Volsci 128 in the San Lorenzo district, a former workshop that has housed a dance studio and photography studio. The inaugural group exhibition, 'Ecco si muove,' features artists Isabelle Ducrot (born 1931, Neapolitan by origin, Roman by adoption), Ximena Garrido-Lecca (Peruvian, born 1980), and Tobias Pils (Austrian, born 1971). Ducrot presents works on paper exploring beauty; Pils shows symbolic canvases in his signature palette of white, black, and gray, evoking Licini's 'Amalassunte' and Austrian iconographic heritage; Garrido-Lecca contributes copper sculptures. A public program includes readings, music, dance, and video screenings with Italian artists and operators. During the opening, Emanuele Dattilo and Pavel Rebernik will present the new catalogue 'Isabella Ducrot. Tendernesses.' The gallery, which also represents artists Jadé Fadojutimi, Charline von Heyl, and Jacqueline Humphries at the Venice Biennale curated by Cecilia Alemani, previously opened a 1,300 sqm space in Berlin in October 2008 in collaboration with Friedrich Petzel Gallery, named Capitain Petzel. The Rome temporary space will remain open temporarily before moving to other cities; further destinations are unannounced but Rome will not be the only Italian stop.
