Galeria de Arte André celebrates Darcy Penteado centennial with 80 works
Galeria de Arte André opens 'Darcy Penteado 100' on May 16, featuring around 80 works including paintings, drawings, portraits, costumes, engravings, collages, and archival items. The exhibition is part of the 'Monográficas' project, now in its ninth edition, curated by Jaqueline Ferreira and Octávio Guastini. Darcy Penteado (1926–1987) was a multifaceted artist active in São Paulo's cultural scene from the 1950s to the 1980s, when he died from HIV-related complications. He was a pioneering activist for LGBTQIAP+ rights and co-founded the newspaper Lampião da Esquina in 1978. The exhibition includes five oil paintings from his 1986 solo show 'Sessenta Anos' at the same gallery, which featured a dramatic lyrical singing performance. Penteado participated in ten editions of the Bienal de São Paulo; his work 'Proposta do amor' at the 12th Bienal in 1973 invited viewers into the piece. As an illustrator, he designed book covers for Graciliano Ramos, Hilda Hilst, and Jorge Amado, winning the Câmara Brasileira do Livro's best illustrator award. The exhibition runs from May 16 to June 20 at Galeria de Arte André, Rua Estados Unidos, 2.280, São Paulo.
