Galera San Soda Opens in Milan with Goswin Schwendinger Solo Show

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Galera San Soda, a new independent gallery founded by Stefano Branca di Romanico, opened in Milan during Art Week 2019. The gallery takes its name from the Italian word for galley, referencing the historical boats rowed by prisoners, as an allegory for the precarious condition of artists. Located in a building by architect Piero Bottoni at Corso Sempione 33, the space was discovered through a photo by Delfino Sisto Legnani in the Taschen book 'Entryways of Milan'. The inaugural exhibition, 'TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER', is the first solo show in Italy by London-based British artist Goswin Schwendinger, featuring installations that challenge social, political, and economic conventions. Branca di Romanico, who studied architecture in London and worked with Armature Globale on the Satoshi Fujiwara exhibition at Osservatorio Prada, aims to support emerging artists with site-specific projects outside traditional gallery formalities. The gallery selects artists through a scientific committee for each show, evaluating their affinity with the architectural and urban context.
