Galeazzo Nardini's lifelong art strike explored in major MO.C.A. retrospective

exhibition · 2026-05-16

The Galleria civica MO.C.A. in Montecatini Terme, Italy, presents "Galeazzo Nardini. Arte Sciopero" from March 22 to June 7, 2026, the first major exhibition dedicated to the Tuscan artist's lifelong conceptual project. Nardini declared an art strike in 1976, ceasing production for the market and obsessively writing only the word "sciopero" (strike) on various objects until his death in 2016. Curated by Cesare Biasini Selvaggi and promoted by the Comune di Montecatini Terme with Archivio Galeazzo Nardini and Contemplazioni, the show features over 120 works spanning four decades. The exhibition includes a documentary by Luca Immesi, which will be screened at Nuovo Cinema Aquila in Rome on May 18, followed by a talk with the curator, Hélène Nardini, and Immesi. Nardini's strike was influenced by the Free Speech Movement, Fluxus, and Situationist theory, aiming to critique the commodification of art. His daughter Hélène describes the strike as a "mantra" and an appeal to artists and scientists to prioritize creative discourse over commerce.
