Gala Porras-Kim's 2025 Exhibitions Challenge Museum Practices Through Material Interventions

Gala Porras-Kim, a Colombian-Korean-American artist, opened 2025 with a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland titled "A Hand in Nature." This presentation examined conservation policies by incorporating local rainwater into copal resin sculptures. Her ongoing Signals series, initiated in 2021, featured canvases created using dehumidifiers that deposited moisture onto graphite-coated fabrics, producing dark, abstract patterns. At the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, she presented "The reflection at the threshold of a categorical division," a project developed in collaboration with museum staff to analyze institutional cataloging and display methodologies. Porras-Kim's practice employs an anthropological lens to investigate the ethical and historical frameworks surrounding cultural artifacts within museum collections. She utilizes meticulous drawings and mixed-media installations that frequently incorporate unconventional materials like dust, mold, and human remains. Her work proposes that artifacts possess inherent agency and meaning, thereby challenging the systematic classifications used by cultural institutions.
