Gagosian to Represent Francesca Woodman Estate, Plans New York Show
Gagosian gallery has reached an agreement with the Woodman Family Foundation to represent the estate of Francesca Woodman (1958–1981), the American photographer known for her intimate, performative self-portraits exploring identity, vulnerability, and the female body. The foundation, established in 2020 by her late parents Betty and George Woodman, will collaborate with Gagosian to present a selection of her works at Art Basel 2023 (June 15–18) ahead of a dedicated exhibition in New York opening March 13, 2024. The New York show, running through April 27, 2024, will feature over 50 key works from 1975 to 1980, including previously unseen pieces such as 'Blueprint for a Temple I,' now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A catalog with essays by Brooke Holmes and Susan Dod Brown (Princeton University) will accompany the exhibition. Woodman's work was previously represented by Marian Goodman Gallery and Victoria Miro Gallery. Gagosian aims to bring to light the artist's extensive archive, including 10,000 negatives and over 800 prints, as well as diaries and notebooks. The New York show coincides with 'Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron: Portraits to Dream In' at the National Portrait Gallery in London (March 21–June 30, 2024). A new book, 'Francesca Woodman: The Artist’s Books,' edited by MACK, is due in June 2023.
