Gagosian Shop Sells Cameo Jewelry Featuring Cindy Sherman and Catherine Opie
The Gagosian Gallery shop at 976 Madison Avenue in New York is selling wearable art: cameo jewelry reproducing portraits by photographers Cindy Sherman and Catherine Opie. The project, called Cameo, was conceived by collector and philanthropist Liz Swig, founder of LIZWORKS, a platform that collaborates with renowned artists to create fashion and design objects. Previous collaborators include Kara Walker, Jeff Koons, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Humberto and Fernando Campana. The cameos are hand-carved by master artisan Gino Di Luca in Torre del Greco, Italy, a historic center for cameo production. Opie's portraits draw on Renaissance influences while depicting contemporary female subjects; Sherman's evoke her retouched selfies on Instagram. Prices range from $10,000 to $35,000.
