Gagosian Paris Honors Gilles Deleuze's Centenary with 'Différence et Répétition' Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Gagosian Gallery's Paris location presents 'Différence et Répétition,' an exhibition celebrating philosopher Gilles Deleuze's 100th birthday. Curated by Serena Cattaneo Adorno, the show runs through May 31, 2025, at the Gagosian Ponthieu space. The exhibition takes its title from Deleuze's 1968 philosophical work and features carefully selected artworks that engage with his concepts of difference and repetition. Donald Judd's 1991 metallic volume installation demonstrates how repetition generates renewal rather than mere seriality. Lucio Fontana's spatial concept piece opens two-dimensional planes into three-dimensional space through slashes, creating what he called 'attese' or waiting. Walter De Maria's 14-sided open polygon sculpture plays with geometric paradoxes. Robert Rauschenberg contributes two works exploring material fragility and cinematic references through recycled movie projectors. A small Picasso sculpture merges human and bull forms, blurring distinctions between species. Andy Warhol's work exemplifies how simulacra proliferate through repetition with variation. The exhibition deliberately limits the number of works to encourage contemplation, opening with a Richard Serra mural and including pieces by Piero Manzoni and Mario Merz. Each artwork functions as a philosophical object rather than mere visual display.
