Gagosian Opens New Gallery in Athens and Expands in Los Angeles
In the midst of a worldwide crisis affecting galleries, Larry Gagosian is broadening his influence with a new venue in Athens, Greece, set to open on September 24 at 22 Anapiron Polemou Street within a neoclassical structure. The opening exhibition will highlight American artist Brice Marden, featuring marble pieces and works on paper that draw from classical traditions. This marks Gagosian's second establishment in Athens, following a 2009 gallery managed by Christina Papadopoulou, who will also oversee the new location. Gagosian, who launched his first gallery in Los Angeles in 1980, now has 18 locations globally, including one on Via Francesco Crispi in Rome. He also announced a new project in the former Marciano Art Foundation space in Los Angeles, anticipated to debut in January 2021. The foundation, established by the Marciano brothers in 2013, ceased operations in November 2019. Gagosian will take over the Theatre Gallery of the previous Masonic temple, which was acquired for $8 million and redesigned by architect Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY. The foundation's collection included 1,500 works by notable artists such as Mark Grotjahn, Sterling Ruby, and Takashi Murakami, under the direction of Jamie G. Manné. This expansion enhances Gagosian's footprint in Los Angeles, complementing his existing Beverly Hills gallery.
