Gagosian Opens Ground-Floor Gallery on Madison Avenue
Gagosian has opened a new 2,275-square-foot gallery on the ground floor of 980 Madison Avenue, a building that originally housed Parke-Bernet Galleries auction house in 1949. The move ends 37 years of operating six stories above street level in a 1,300-square-foot space. Director Millicent Wilner called it a "new chapter." The inaugural shows feature Marcel Duchamp and Robert Rauschenberg. Architect Jonathan Caplan renovated three retail spaces into a unified gallery with 12-foot-3-inch ceilings and advanced lighting by Dot Dash. The relocation was partly prompted by Bloomberg Philanthropies, which leased much of the building in 2023 and purchased it for $560 million in June 2024. Gagosian declined to comment on rent payments. The gallery aims to be more accessible and community-oriented. The exhibitions run April 25–June 27, 2026.
