Gabrielle Wambaugh's Sculptural Dialectic at Galerie Eric Dupont
Gabrielle Wambaugh's exhibition at Galerie Eric Dupont in Paris, running from April 2, 2002 to June 2, 2001 (note: dates appear inverted in source), presents a sculptural investigation of interior and exterior spaces. The centerpiece, "Biens-meubles," is a column of approximately 6,000 black plastic bags attached to a wire mesh armature, standing about two meters high, with a band extending to the gallery wall. The work challenges spatial boundaries, using the bag as a material that defines visible and hidden realms. Smaller glazed stoneware pieces in gray, brown, and moss green tones populate the space, some containing compressed black plastic visible through openings. Works like "Pétard," "Babouche," "Relax," and "Sheep" feature plastic spilling from their containers or pierced bases. Other ceramics resemble geysers of vermicelli ("Houppette," "Sashimi") or hood-masks ("Genoux," "Unicorne"), displayed on shelves or platforms. "Extensions-pousses 1 & 2" cling to walls and ceilings, suggesting viral propagation. Wambaugh's practice includes a barter economy with farmers, exchanging scarecrow photographs for goods, as seen in photographic fragments in the exhibition. The artist considers all her productions—photographs, clay objects, plastic swarms, videos, and sound pieces—as sculptures, each affirming a traversal and connection between inside and outside.
