Gabriele Stötzer's Retrospective at Gropius Bau Explores Art and Resistance in East Germany

A major retrospective of Gabriele Stötzer at Berlin's Gropius Bau highlights the intersection of art, resistance, and formal experimentation in her work. The exhibition, titled "Dabei sein und…" and co-curated by Julia Grosse, features the iconic 1981 photograph "Selbst," taken shortly after Stötzer's release from Hoheneck women's prison in the Erzgebirge. Grosse describes the photo as a "birth as an artist." Stötzer emerged from the artistic underground of the GDR, and her work challenges conventional formats.
