Gabriele Münter retrospective at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid
The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid presents 'Gabriele Münter. La gran pintora expresionista', the first retrospective in Spain dedicated to the German Expressionist painter (1877–1962), running until 9 February 2025. Featuring 145 works including paintings, drawings, and photographs, the exhibition traces Münter's career from her early amateur photography through her travels with Wassily Kandinsky, her pivotal role in Der Blaue Reiter, her exile in Scandinavia during World War I, and her later work after returning to Germany. The show is organized in three sections and builds on the museum's commitment to highlighting overlooked female artists, following previous exhibitions such as 'Women Masters' (2023–2024) and shows on Rosario de Velasco and Isabel Quintanilla. Münter, a co-founder of Der Blaue Reiter alongside Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Paul Klee, August Macke, Alexej von Jawlensky, and Marianne von Werefkin, is gaining international recognition beyond Germany. The retrospective draws from four of her works in the museum's permanent collection.
