Gabriele Basilico's Metropolitan Photography in Major Rome Exhibition
Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome presents over 250 works by Gabriele Basilico (Milan, 1944-2013), exploring his lifelong relationship with urban environments. Curated by Filippo Maggia and Giovanna Calvenzi (also head of Archivio Gabriele Basilico and Basilico's life partner), with contributions from Alberto Saibene of Humboldt Books, the exhibition includes 40 photographs from 'Milano ritratti di fabbriche' (1978-1980), 96 from 'Sezioni del paesaggio italiano', an unprecedented selection of Beirut works (black-and-white from 1991 and color from 2011), and a section on world metropolises featuring never-before-shown images of Liverpool and Boston. A dedicated Rome section follows Basilico's Tiber River route. The exhibition also includes a biographical narrative covering projects like the DATAR mission. Basilico's approach combined architectural training with a fascination for 'medium' architecture, peripheries, ports, and concrete, seeking to reveal cities' essence through careful study and repeated site visits. His archive, managed by Calvenzi and Gianni Nigro, aims to become a public institution. The exhibition runs at Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome.
