Gabriele Basilico's Landscape Photography in San Vito al Tagliamento

The exhibition 'La progettualità dello sguardo: fotografie di paesaggio' at the Church of San Lorenzo in San Vito al Tagliamento showcases a lesser-known but persistent aspect of Gabriele Basilico's work: his landscape photography. Curated by Giovanna Calvenzi and Angela Madesani, the show opens with forty shots from 1992 documenting Gemona, a Friulian town heavily affected by the 1976 earthquake. Basilico meticulously explored the area, avoiding clichéd views to capture the layering of rural scenes and modern buildings on the natural landscape. The exhibition continues with small-format photographs of Luigi Snozzi's architecture in Monte Carasso, Switzerland, commissioned in 1997, which echo the Bechers' systematic approach. A section on natural landscapes includes images from the Strait of Messina for the 'Atlante Italiano' project (2003), works from Portugal and Spain, and the famous 'Bord de Mer' series from his first major international commission by the French government. The final section presents a substantial body of work from the San Gottardo pass (1997), where human intervention is sparse but present, leaving only a strip of asphalt crossing the slopes.
