Gabriele Basilico and Esther Mathis Dual Exhibition at Studio La Città, Verona
Studio La Città in Verona presents a dual exhibition featuring Gabriele Basilico's Iranian photographs and Esther Mathis's glass and potato installations, running until June 18, 2016. Basilico's series, curated by his partner Giovanna Calvenzi, focuses on Persepolis, with prints made by the photographer himself and discovered by Calvenzi. The images show Basilico's early photographic conception, influenced by Walker Evans and August Sander, and explore dialectics of ruin and beauty, void and fullness, geometry and disorder. Mathis's 'Isolated Systems Vol. 2' consists of glass towers with irregularly cut square plates fixed by a central glue point, creating a fluid internal volume. Her 'Isolated Systems Vol. 1' features hundreds of potatoes arranged in circular groups of seven, connected by electrical circuits to illuminate LED bulbs, evoking an entropic community and commemorative monument.
